It’s not a perfect fit, but there appear to be zero charters in areas that are over 50% white.

You get the feeling that beneath everything else is the simple belief that the premise Brown v. Board of Education was wrong: separate can be equal. You just need the right CMO and some TFA-ers.
Why do you think they are concerned in any way with equality? There are two, separate, unequal systems of education. They are making them more distinct. I don’t even see a nod at equality.
Most interesting juxtaposition. What this also points out is that the proximate cause of the problems in the so called “failing schools” originates, not in the teachers who are now being scapegoated, but in the communities served by the schools. While this should not be used as an excuse to do nothing, who has the fortitude to look at this as a social problem that needs to be addressed, primarily, by the community? Dismantling the public schools, getting rid of the experienced teachers and replacing them with charters staffed mainly with new recruits won’t solve the problem, and may only compound it further. Unfortunately, those who always wanted to do in public education have now found unwitting allies in parents who want the best for their kids, and don’t want them trapped in chaotic schools. But the solution lies in understanding why some of the public schools, many of them once excellent, declined in certain areas, and not in others. It is in the interest of the community, and the parents in particular, to confront this problem rather than to avoid it.
